Yenkin-Majestic Paints With A Specialty Brush

A provider of specialty paint products, Yenkin-Majestic makes its mark through customer service.

In 2020, Yenkin-Majestic Paint Corp. will achieve 100 years in business. This is a significant milestone, but successful businesses understand that if they kept everything the same about their operations for 100 years, most milestones would not be met. Yenkin-Majestic has maintained 100 years of excellence having reinvented itself a few times, while always maintaining a high level of customer service. Regardless of its market or product focus, the company is dedicated to keeping its customers happy and delivering what they need with a 99 percent fill rate and on-time delivery.

Over the years, Yenkin-Majestic has grown itself into three divisions: Majic Paints, which makes primarily architectural specialty paints; YM Industrial, which sells customized OEM coatings; and OPC Polymers, a maker of resins used throughout the paint industry.

“On the consumer side of our business, we are well recognized today in two areas,” President of the Coating Division, Noel Booker, explains. “One is as the U.S. leader in the farm and agricultural paints, particularly in aftermarket tractor and implement enamels. The other is as a supplier of small can specialty paints targeting the craft and DIY markets.

“In contrast, our OEM finishes, although applied to products you know and use every day,” has little consumer awareness he adds. “Other than the product manufacturer, nobody really thinks about the brand of paint applied to an ironing board, golf balls or to a shipping container. However, they all get painted. Our job at YM Industrial is to make products made by other companies look and perform great.”

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Yenkin-Majestic is one of the largest, family-owned paint manufacturers and distributors in the United States. While arguably not the best-known name in the industry, it continues to make a mark through customer service, according to Vice President of Sales and Marketing Kathy Streng. By making time for its customers and remaining accessible to their needs, she says, the company continues to grow. This is shown, in part, by its in-house lab, where Yenkin-Majestic focuses on specialty paint products and customization.

“We excel in specialty products,” Booker says. “We may introduce new products or totally new formulations that perform better than old formulations, but we are especially good at giving new life to tried-and-true formulations that face regulatory challenges, particularly among the myriad of differing VOC air regulations across the United States.”

New Formulas

There are many sets of regulations on the federal, state and local levels regarding paint, and part of Yenkin-Majestic’s dedication to quality is providing high performing VOC compliant paints nationwide, and helping consumers, contractors and paint retailers to have access to the products they want and need. As a result, the company frequently looks at which products are in demand, but under regulatory pressure in terms of air quality. It spends a lot of time reformulating these products to ensure they are compliant in all or most markets.

“One of the immediate results of that is there are other paint manufacturers that come to us for tolling assistance,” Booker explains. “Our OPC resin side of the business really gives us an edge in understanding paint chemistry. There are often product categories that other paint manufacturers want to continue selling, but simply can’t economically build a compliant formula. They will contract with us with a project, and in most cases, we are able to seamlessly transition their formula to make them a complaint product, and they never miss a beat.”

Based in Ohio, Yenkin-Majestic expanded its lab to support its growth goals.

At the same time, there is an increased demand for specialty products because of new materials in construction, and with repurposing being the rage, people are wanting to paint things never before thought of as being paintable. That can be challenging for traditional paints or coatings, Booker notes, which is why most of Yenkin-Majestic’s new products and sales are in specialty coatings. The company see nothing but opportunity. If fact, it recently launched a new product line called REPURPOSE. The product is already offered through selected national retailers, and is supported by a website, www.creativity-unleashed.com.

“We are increasing the size of our lab and adding more people for the development of specialty products,” Streng explains. “While we grow, however, we work hard to continue having an atmosphere where people want to stay. There is a lot of longevity here, and we like that so many people have found their way at this company.”

Booker adds that the lab expansion will support Yenkin-Majestic’s growth goals. “We will continue to introduce new products that are specialized in nature because they have special uses,” he says. “And with our lab expansion, we really segmented it. Now, part of the lab does plant support, quality control and maintenance of our existing product formulas, while another section is dedicated to new technology and new products.”

Additionally, he notes, continuous improvement helps Yenkin-Majestic respond to customers’ needs and maintain a high level of service. “We are ISO 9001 certified, so along with that we are very system-oriented in terms of manufacturing processes,” he says. “We have a structured way of doing things, and that includes everything from introducing a new product or label compliance or product compliance to manufacturing processes and the whole nine yards. If you stick to those established methods, it improves processes and makes you more efficient.”
